A year of food storage

Enter the number of people in your family... This software has it all broken down into the most affordable, basic staples that still supply your dietary and full nutritional needs for a year's food supply for each person. Saves a lot of scratch-paper work, and even if you're not into wheat, it gives you a really good idea, a baseline of what you are lookin' at in terms of a full year's food supply per family member.

Go on.... Enter a number at the top. It's neat.

Too bad it doesn't calculate how many dollars that takes... That would be very useful indeed.

You could always print out your calculations, then do some window shopping at local stores, with local farmers, and online to see who offers you the most for your money.

Has anyone one used this internet wholesaler? www.bulkfoods.com? they have pretty good prices and free shipping on orders over $100, I have just place an order with them for a bunch of stuff. Mostly dried beans and whole grains.

When I used to be a plumber I kept a spreadsheet with current prices from home Despot and a couple other vendors of the things I bought a lot of. It was hard work keeping that updated. Food would be even more difficult because prices fluctuate so much. Maybe i could write an applet to download pricing from vons.com... Hmmm...

    www.shelfreliance.com
It's a company based in Idaho and they actually have a store there.

That site comes from the ward canneries of the LDS church... Which is a pretty sweet deal, they have massive tin-canning machines free for use, they don't even charge for the cans.... And all the staples they sell are at direct cost...no profit at all... the building is paid for and kept running by the church's tithing moneys, same for the canning machines. I checked into it, but it looks like a members-only type of thing.... Sorry guys... I'll ask around, and if there are any exceptions or loopholes, I'll let ya know!

My tax returns are going stricktly and wholely toward emergency preparations.... The wife is 100% behind me on this, so I'm stoked! full year food supply for each of us, and then it's off to the camping stores and gunshows!

We still have canned vegtables left over from last year and most of the garden planted this year. We have alot of fozen beef and deer meat and sweet corn in the deep freeze. If there's power failure I planning on using salt boxes.

That sounds like a pretty good setup, Brent!

I plan to do some planting this year, and I want to kill something in the mountains for my first time this fall, mostly to learn the experience and procedure of cleaning and butchering, and storing up the meat. This fall is going to be my year to learn all about canning, drying, and any other types of DIY food preservation. In fact, I think I'll start another thread on that.

Okay kids I said I would find out if us funny mormons let you scary 'outsiders' into our awesome cannery 'storehouses'... the answer is 'most likely'... here's an (old, sorry) link to the info you need.
    waltonfeed.com/grain/faqs/vif.html

What with the coming grain shortages (and don't kid yourself, they ARE coming, they are right at our collective national DOORSTEP!) it would be WELL WORTH YOUR WHILE to figure out where your local cannery is, and see if you can get in! You will be hard pressed to find lower prices on food anywhere else!

(I believe the original topic linked page has a phone number near the bottom to call for cannery info, since this link just has a mailing address if I remember correctly)

Within the next two weeks, I'm going to have a year supply for me and my wife, as well as at least one of those fifty gallon water barrels (the water is more of a 'just because'...the grain is more of a 'because I feel like we need to this year) I strongly urge you, my friends, to PACK YOUR FRIGGIN' RICE!

I don't know, in 4 month's they will be cutting corn. Cutting wheat very shortly and everything else later in the fall. I think if we just dont export it or try to turn it into fuel we'll have more than we need.

I ordered 25 new rhode island red's today before I read any famine new's. I may order 50 more tomarrow now. Have something that will reproduce and be concealed in the barn if need be. I'll try to hang onto some cow's and I have that damn pig hemmed up now. When I crave some bacon I'm going to introduce him to my .22 mag. lol I'm also considering planting an acre of corn for chicken feed. Maybe keep it in some kind of crib style building and grind it up as I need it. Or loot from one of those 15000 acre farmer's around here. lol Horses dont get any unless theyre working. (stealing somebody elses cow's) lol

        You caught that pot-belly?!!

Do me a favor and kick him in the nuts, just for being a pot-bellied-pig. They just passed a law in utah that it's a felony to kick a pot belly pig in the nuts now. I still have issues, now they're gonna get all bottled up!

I tried to kick him in the nut's but he's been cut already. lol He doesnt have any. Far as I know you can still kick a pig in the nut's in missouri, if they have them. But I think it's against the law to shoot a bull in the nut's with a bb gun. lol
